After three months away, Palmeiras return to Allianz Parque on Sunday to reopen their artificial pitch towards Mirassol at 18h30, Brasília time. Globo.com notes that the fixture carries coincidences for the membership, starting with the identical opponent that launched the floor in 2020.
In 2020, the bogus grass period started towards Mirassol on 16 February, within the sixth spherical of the Campeonato Paulista. Palmeiras have been led by Vanderlei Luxemburgo and already had Weverton, Gustavo Gómez and Raphael Veiga.
The context was tough, coming off a trophyless 2019. Luxemburgo had arrived in December searching for a reset.
On that day Palmeiras fell behind, with the primary aim on the brand new floor scored by Mirassol’s Rafael Silva. They turned it spherical via Gómez, Veiga and Luiz Adriano, and later lifted the State title towards Corinthians on penalties.
After the State Championship, the pandemic interrupted soccer earlier than the Brasileiro resumed. Luxemburgo’s spell led to October, he was dismissed and changed by Abel Ferreira.
So the pitch change coincided with a brand new period. Under the Portuguese coach, Palmeiras have received 11 trophies.
The parallels with 2020 are clear. As then, Palmeiras are coming off a season with out silverware and with lots to show. The match may very well be a brand new start line.
Unlike 2020, when synthetic turf divided opinion contained in the membership, the swap is now taken in stride. Players praised the brand new floor after a session on Tuesday.
