James Van Der Beek, the actor who captured hearts as Dawson Leery on the WB drama Dawson’s Creek, passed away at 48, according to a statement shared on his social media accounts on Wednesday. Known for his sensitive, brooding portrayal of the small-town teen navigating love, friendship, and ambition, Van Der Beek became one of the defining faces of late-1990s teen television. The series ran from 1998 to 2003, launching the careers of several young actors while cementing Van Der Beek’s place in pop culture.

“Our beloved James David Van Der Beek passed peacefully this morning,” the post read. “He met his final days with courage, faith, and grace. There is much to share regarding his wishes, love for humanity and the sacredness of time. For now, we ask for peaceful privacy as we grieve our loving husband, father, son, brother, and friend.”

Beyond Dawson’s Creek, Van Der Beek’s career spanned film and television. He portrayed a small-town quarterback in Varsity Blues and later embraced self-parody as himself in ABC’s Don’t Trust the (Expletive) in Apartment 23. More recently, he was involved in Austin-based projects, including appearances tied to the production of Walker. Van Der Beek relocated to Austin in 2020 to focus on family life, seeking a slower pace away from Hollywood while continuing his craft.

In 2024, Van Der Beek publicly revealed a diagnosis of stage 3 colorectal cancer, which he had received in the summer of 2023. His passing comes after a long and courageous fight, leaving behind his wife Kimberly and their six children. A GoFundMe campaign described him as “a beloved husband, father, and friend who touched the lives of everyone around him,” while noting the significant financial strain the family endured during his treatment.

Celebrities and fans alike have paid tribute. Chad Michael Murray, his WB co-star, wrote: “Sending love and light to your beautiful family. James was a giant. His words, art, and humanity inspired all of us — he inspired us to be better in all ways. God bless you.” Van Der Beek’s life, both on and off screen, leaves an enduring legacy of talent, warmth, and dedication to family.
