iQOO 15R ditches 200MP camera rumours for 50MP camera: here’s why that’s fine

iQOO has been aggressively teasing its new sub-flagship, the iQOO 15R. It’s confirmed to launch in India on February 24th as the first ‘R’ model in the flagship lineup, playing the role of an affordable alternative to the iQOO 15. But with every new detail revealed, the iQOO 15R is positioning itself as a flagship killer. iQOO has now revealed the camera details of the 15R, confirming the main sensor.

The iQOO 15R will feature a 50MP Sony LYT-700 sensor as its primary camera. This is a notable shift from earlier expectations. This is based on speculation that the device is widely believed to be a rebranded version of the iQOO Z11 Turbo in China, which uses a 200MP Samsung HP5 sensor. Instead, iQOO appears to be prioritising image quality and consistency over sheer megapixel count.

This move might disappoint buyers, but Sony’s LYT-700 sensor is known for light capture and dynamic range, particularly in challenging lighting conditions. In practical terms, this should translate to more reliable low-light photos and better color accuracy. We should get a better idea once we test the device.

As for the rest of the cameras, it could be an 8MP ultra-wide camera at the back, and a 32MP front camera. The overall camera setup suggests that the iQOO 15R isn’t focusing too much on photography but still aims to provide dependable sensors.

Performance and endurance are where the iQOO 15R is expected to stand out. The smartphone is confirmed to be powered by the Snapdragon 8 Gen 5, Qualcomm’s latest sub-flagship chipset, the same platform used by its closest rival, the OnePlus 15R. This immediately places both devices on equal footing in terms of raw processing power. Backing up that performance is a massive 7,600mAh battery, giving the iQOO 15R a slight edge over the OnePlus 15R’s 7,400mAh cell. While the difference may look minor on paper, it could translate into a few extra hours of screen-on time in real-world usage, especially for gaming and streaming.

With this combination, the iQOO 15R is shaping up to be a serious performance-focused device. Users can expect flagship-level gaming performance, consistently smooth multitasking, and hardware that should remain relevant for several years. However, because the core specifications between the iQOO 15R and the OnePlus 15R are so closely matched, the final choice is likely to come down to factors beyond raw specs, such as thermal management, software optimisation, and overall user experience.

The phone is also tipped to feature a 6.59-inch AMOLED display with 1.5K resolution and a 144Hz refresh rate. High refresh rate panels have become increasingly common, but 144Hz still sits at the upper end of the spectrum. This would mean ultra-smooth scrolling, more responsive gameplay, and a visibly fluid interface, particularly appealing to mobile gamers and power users. The screen size is also somewhat compact and not too large, so that could be a bonus as well.

iQOO is also committing to four Android OS upgrades and six years of security updates, which is a very decent number for this segment.

The iQOO 15R will be Rs 50,000, with a possible starting point around Rs 47,999. This would place it directly against the OnePlus 15R. Based on early expectations, the iQOO 15R appears tailor-made for those who prioritise performance, battery life, and durability, but still want a capable, reliable camera system. If your usage revolves around gaming, heavy multitasking, and long screen-on times, and you don’t want to pay full flagship prices, the iQOO 15R could be one of the most compelling options in its segment.
