Days after the Supreme Court passed a judgment — the primary of its sort — permitting withdrawal of clinically-assisted vitamin and hydration (CANH) to Harish Rana, who was in a vegetative state for 13 years, he handed away on the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), Delhi on Tuesday.

The hospital, in a press release, mentioned that Mr. Rana handed away at 4.10 p.m., including that he was below the care of a devoted group of docs . The hospital mentioned, “AIIMS extends its heartfelt condolences to his family and loved ones during this difficult time.”

On March 11, the courtroom directed that he be shifted from his residence in Ghaziabad to AIIMS, the place medical therapy might finally be withdrawn. The judgment was welcome by his mother and father, who mentioned that no mother or father needed to “see their son suffer”.

His father, Ashok Rana had earlier advised The Hindu that the judgment was gratifying however tough for the household. He added that the household referred to it as “dignity in death” as a substitute of “passive euthanasia”. The Supreme Court, in its judgment too, mentioned that they have been changing “passive euthanasia” with the time period “withdrawing or withholding of medical treatment”.

Mr. Rana was 32. He had sustained extreme accidents and had 100% quadriplegic incapacity after a fall from the fourth flooring of his paying visitor lodging when he was a Panjab University scholar in 2013.

After his dying, his household is learnt to have donated his corneas and coronary heart valves, which have been retrieved by the hospital.
