Gangtok, Feb 27: A sequence of earthquakes has sparked widespread panic in Sikkim, with a number of tremors reported late Thursday and into early Friday. The most up-to-date occurred at round 4:10 a.m. immediately a shallow 3.7 magnitude quake at a depth of 5 km, centered at 27.40° N latitude and 88.69° E longitude, in line with the National Centre for Seismology (NCS). Residents throughout the state, particularly in West Sikkim, reported robust shaking.
Yesterday alone, Sikkim skilled 4 separate quakes, inflicting injury to infrastructure at Gangyap School and Gerethang School. No casualties or main injury have been reported up to now. Authorities are assessing the state of affairs and have urged residents to stay alert and observe security protocols.
Meanwhile, Arunachal Pradesh felt a 3.4 magnitude earthquake in Changlang district on February 15 at 8:50 p.m. IST. The tremor, at a depth of 10 km, occurred at 27.32° N latitude and 96.12° E longitude. According to NCS, no injury or casualties have been reported.
The latest exercise highlights the seismic vulnerability of the northeastern area, prompting officers to emphasise earthquake preparedness amongst residents.
