Kolkata Metro Gets Battery Backup System For Power Outage Emergencies, Blue Line

Kolkata:

Metro Railway Kolkata, India’s first metro, has commissioned a Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) alongside the underground stretch of its Blue Line to boost power effectivity and guarantee passenger security throughout energy outages.

The system – the primary of its form in Indian Railways – was commissioned within the presence of General Manager S S Mishra and different senior officers.

The BESS system includes inverters and Advanced Chemistry Cell (ACC) Batteries, and is able to offering saved energy in case of an influence outage or grid failure. The 4 MW BESS is conceptualised as per the National Program on Advanced Chemistry Cell Battery Storage, accredited by the Union Cabinet within the yr 2021, and is powered by a 6.4 MWh Lithium Iron Phosphate (LFP) battery as an power storage component.

It has been designed in such a manner that the electrical energy saved by it may be used to haul rakes at 55 km/hr velocity from the mid-tunnel to the subsequent station, if stranded in case of any Grid Failure, apart from offering energy provide to the tunnel air flow and setting management system on the underground stations. The system, additionally geared up with inexperienced batteries, has a lifespan of round 14 years and is compact in design. It can be going to scale back carbon footprint with higher power effectivity than typical turbines.

The system will effectively deal with spikes in energy demand and enhance the ability issue, which is able to cut back the power invoice.

It is learnt that if the ability provide immediately goes out throughout the metro operation, it is going to be potential to achieve the breakdown rack to the closest metro station by the microgrid system.
